Fake plastic…

Trees No! Puffins!
Fake Plastic Puffins!

Wait, what?

Remember Radiohead telling us about Fake Plastic Trees?

Her green plastic watering can
For her fake Chinese rubber plant
In the fake plastic earth
That she bought from a rubber man
In a town full of rubber plans
To get rid of itself

Here they are doing it at Glastonbury in 2003. (You may remember that I was there.)

And let’s not knock it, because it’s a great song.
But we’re not on about Fake Plastic Trees. Fake Plastic Trees are so passé.
You want to know about the puffins; the Fake Plastic Puffins.

The FPPs are being deployed on the Calf of Man – that’s the small uninhabited island off the southwest coast of the Isle of Man (just next door to the Chicken Rock, actually). And they’re being deployed with a purpose – to encourage Real Meaty Puffins (RMPs) to come and breed again on the island.

Puffins are both gregarious and notoriously unadventurous; they won’t try new nesting sites (technically, puffins live in burrows, not nests, but still…) if there aren’t already some puffins there. But it seems that they don’t need to be RMPs – they can be FPPs and still have the same effect.
Puffins aren’t ever so observant and are a bit daft, it would seem. Aukward.

Manx National Heritage are pretty excited about being involved in the project, and have promised to keep us updated on its progress. I follow them on Facebook, so I’ll pass any news on to you. I know you’ll be interested.

(Thought: Maybe I need to install some Fake Plastic Blog Readers here…? Hmm…)

Meanwhile, here’s another great post about Puffin recipes.
You’re probably best to use RMPs rather than the FPP version for these though.

Anyone Can Play Guitar

Although of course, it’s not strictly true that anyone can play guitar well. But I was reminded of this vintage Radiohead track this week and felt the need to share:

This was actually my first introduction to Radiohead, on a Parlophone (careful now) cassette tape given to us freshers in our first week at Newcastle Uni. I’m going to have a dig around at home and see if I can find it – the track listing would be “interesting”. This was the standout track (and the second best on their Pablo Honey album), but there were other good tracks on there as well.
The Frames’ Masquerade was one – I’ll list the others when if I find the tape.

Is this the best Radiohead single ever?

I’m a big fan and have been for years and years, but even I am blown away by Staircase.
Here it is “Live From The Basement”, which reminds me of something out of Twin Peaks (not my basement: it doesn’t have curtains…)

Thom Yorke is breaking moulds and writing some really innovative stuff at the moment. The bassline on this track is so mellow, but so progressive. The electronica evokes the 80’s with some Royksopp and a hint of DJ Shadow thrown in there as well, but the minor chords in the refrain remind us who we’re listening to.

No indication yet as to when the FTB album is due out, but this alone makes it worth getting: whatever else is on there.

OK GO – single shot video

They did the treadmills, they did the Reub Goldberg Machine.

Now they’ve done another epic video for their latest song End Love.
And this time, it’s got a goose in it.

Utterly amazing…

Director Jeff Lieberman says:

The fastest we go is 172,800x, compressing 24 hours of real time into a blazing 1/2 second. The slowest is 1/32x speed, stretching a mere 1/2 second of real time into a whopping 16 seconds. This gives us a fastest to slowest ratio of 5.5 million. If you like averages, the average speed up factor of the band dancing is 270x. In total we shot 18 hours of the band dancing and 192 hours of LA skyline timelapse – over a million frames of video – and compressed it all down to 4 minutes and 30 seconds!
Oh and don’t forget, it’s one continuous camera shot.
We also made a special friend in the process. Her name is Orange Bill and she’s a goose. You will agree that she clearly has a future in music videos.

Traditionalists will realise that you can’t post music videos which mess around with the speed of time without linking to the black and white Airsteam caravan inspired brilliance that is Radiohead’s Street Spirit (Fade Out).
I will do this here.
In fact, no I won’t – I’ll go one step further and post it up:

Wow. Memories, anyone?
