It’s all about 6000

Incoming email from Woolworths and their MySchool programme. And I feature highly:

We’re sharing the love even more this month and making a difference.
We’ve partnered with the 94.5 KFM and Radio Highveld Ground Patrol Team to give 6000 needy school kids in Cape Town and Johannesburg nutritious lunches, plus we helped these 10 schools with a donation of library books and much-needed stationery.
Through your support we’re making a difference.

And then, on top of that (not literally), this:

It’s a fact: one unsterilised female dog and her offspring can give rise to 67 000 dogs in 6 years.
But in the last 6 years at African Tails, the opposite has happened: MySchool funds have helped sterilise a whopping 6000 animals (mostly dogs, and some cats)!

You can read more about that second story here.

I’m no huge fan of Woolworths (we’ve crossed swords on more than one occasion), but I don’t see why people don’t get MySchool cards. There’s absolutely no extra cost to the customer, there are discounts on items in store and part of your spend goes towards a good cause, like those above.

You can apply online here. Go do it and help out another 6000 needy individuals.

Seven London Bridges by Brian

Brian Micklethwait has been photographing London again. This time, looking straight down the river from the balcony of the ME Hotel Radio Bar. He (accurately) claims seven bridges in this photo:

ME7Bridges

I love how, because of the foreshortening effect, there’s almost no river showing at all.

As Brian says,

I thought I was photographing just the one big, obvious bridge, the one with the towers.  But it turned out that I was photographing seven bridges. Newcastle eat your heart out.  Sorry about that big white circumcised cock in the foreground, getting in the way.

LOL.

And since he invoked Newcastle, I’ll just leave this six bridge effort here:

Which, despite not quite matching Brian’s in absolute quantity, does also include a “Milennium Bridge” and surely wins in the ‘larger percentage of major bridges over any given river in one particular shot stakes’.
Happily, it also comprehensively fails to have a big white circumcised cock in the foreground.

Double bonus.

And while we’re on the subject of river crossing photos, may I remind you of this numerically inaccurate Three Prague Bridges post from 2009?

BA A380 over Cape Town – photos

I promised you a couple of photos of this alleged “world first” of an A380 flypast over Table Mountain and, by the end of this post, I shall have delivered. These were collected from various internet sites via the medium of Google and I’m leaving them large, because they look better that way.

We’ve yet to have a more cloudy day this year, either before or since the BA flypast, but I think you’ll agree that it still looks rather spectacular.

BA A380 SA3 - Copy

That said, I’m sure that we’re all still rather confused as to why BA didn’t choose to take photos over any one of the many iconic and beautiful natural landmarks in Johannesburg.

Go to Barristers

Just a quick heads up. I’ve been to Barristers three times already this year, for one reason and another. And then another. But I’ve been more than happy to go back again and again. That’s because their food and service have been nothing short of excellent each and every time I’ve visited.

I would have to take the bold step and say that their steaks are currently the best I’ve ever tasted. And if you’ve eaten steak in South Africa, you’ll know that that’s a fairly impressive claim. Add to that a huge array of beers on tap and a huge wine list and suddenly, I’m wondering why I ever went anywhere else.

Barristers hit a bit of a low a few years back, but it’s come through and the change in management and a careful, but noticeable adjustment to the restaurant and decor has made all the difference.
It’s now my first choice for beer, steak and beer. Give it a go.

Barristers website.
Barristers operates the EntertainerZA scheme.
Steaks are half-price on Monday. Unbelievable value.
