Smalltown Boy

As I have mentioned previously, blogging at 6000 miles… is on partial hold at the moment, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t listen to classic 80′s music and share it with you. And this has to feature one of the most enduring riffs of that decade.

Amazingly, this track only reached number 3 in the UK charts, although Jimmy Somerville’s voice went on to have greater chart success after it was taken over by Justin Hawkins of The Darkness in 2003.

Quota Lighthouse

Because of one thing and another (but mainly one thing), I think it’s fair to say that posts are going to be a little erratic here for the next week at least, so please bear with me and in the meantime, enjoy a quota photo of Green Point Lighthouse:

Go large

I’ve never really understood why it is painted in garish red and white diagonal stripes.
“So that it stands out from the buildings around it,” they tell me.
Does the big, bright, rotating light on the top of it not do that adequately enough then?

And how can the crews of ships passing off the Atlantic seaboard see the stripes at night anyway? Even with very powerful binoculars, they would surely be dazzled by that big, bright, rotating light on the top of it.
And when they can see the stripes during the day, at what point is it important that they recognise the building as a lighthouse? Surely the presence of any building at all would indicate land: something which is best avoided if you are a ship – vessels which tend to prefer wet places, which land is not.

Colour me confused (but not diagonally red and white).

Needed some laughs

It’s not been the best day ever, at the end of what has not been the best week ever. I need some laughs and I headed to my handily-placed YouTube comedy wardrobe in search of them.

Here’s what I found.

Hopefully, that R2.4 billion will enable the Swazi people to improve their small talk skills.

I hope it brought a smile to your face as well.

DPRK

Off to have some more tests done today as the local medical profession charges me exorbitant rates to find out why I’m feeling so crappy (although I think we may be getting somewhere now). So I’ll leave you with this collection of photos from Inside North Korea:

Earlier this year, David Guttenfelder, chief Asia photographer for the Associated Press, along with Jean H. Lee, AP bureau chief in Seoul, were granted unprecedented access to parts of North Korea as part of the AP’s efforts to expand coverage of the isolated communist nation.  Though much of what the AP journalists saw was certainly orchestrated, their access was still remarkable.

And there are some great photos via that link above:

Kim Jong-il knew a bargain when he saw one and was delighted with the price of the light blue paint

It doesn’t look like a particularly happy place, but it does look like a particularly interesting place: not unlike East Germany, which I visited before it wasn’t East Germany anymore.
And you can go there on your own organised tour as well. They want more visitors; they just mustn’t be from the South.

If I had a bucket list, DPRK would be on it. But with a battery of invasive medical tests ahead of me, I think I’ll settle for just getting this blog post out for the time being. Aim low, keep happy.

Out of the bad

Out of the bad, and it is bad – ridiculously, stupidly, embarrassingly bad – comes some good.

Step forward, photoshoplooter, whereby images of heinous acts committed over the last few days are turned, via the medium of Photoshop, into embarrassing identikits of the guilty parties.

I could do stuff like this. All I need is Photoshop.

As I write, it seems to be spreading: Manchester, Salford, West Midlands, even mention of Milton Keynes and Mansfield. Looking for positives in all this, Wolverhampton may actually be improved by some violent redesigning.
