A quota photo from Norway last year. This was taken lying between the rails of the Flåmsbana, just outside the village of Flåm.
The lengths I go to and the risks I take just to get interesting shots, ne? Not that I even needed to get interesting shots that day. The rest of the scenery was by far enough to ensure the day’s photographic mission was a complete success. Fjords are great in that way.
“Go West! Life is peaceful there!”
So sang the Village People and then so also sang the Pet Shop Boys.
So it must be true.
Trouble is, if you’re in Cape Town and you’re planning to follow that advice, life is going to be rather wet there too. (West being the South Atlantic, for the geographically-challenged.)
That’s why I’m going to turn things around and Go East! this weekend.
Logic suggests that life will be turbulent there, and, should we extrapolate through the rest of the song, that we will be enclosed, alone, there will be rain in the summertime, the skies will be grey and we will do anything except be just fine.
Hmm. East seems a bit crap, to be honest.
Still, the beaglesitter is booked and we’re heading off… East… for a weekend away. Posts here will continue (obviously), and my Instagram is always open for your delectation.
Have yourself a good one. And try not to contract antibiotic-resistant Gonorrhea. (That latter bit of advice applies beyond this weekend, to be honest.)
A year ago (or so), we were in Mauritius. And thus, when I was looking for a quota photo to put onto the site for what is promised to be a rather damp day in Agulhas, I thought I’d take a trip back there via Flickr.
This – the Mighty Servant 3 – was one of the large vessels sitting on the anchorage off Port Louis which we passed as we headed south to see and swim with the dolphins at the improbably named bay of Flic-en-Flac.
We’ve seen some Mighty Servant action off Agulhas as well (like this). But as you will see if you click through on that link, we were a bit closer on this occasion.
I’m out of town for a few days, so expect shorter, punchier, compact and bijoux posts for a while.
But then, sometimes less is more. For example, when reading this headline:

This is just day 1! You lucky folks!
We’re just seven weeks away from midwinter here, and thus, the light (even in Africa) was rather washed out for a lot of the time.
Additionally, it’s not always possible to get the best angle for photography, despite the best efforts of Philip, our ranger. These are wild animals and if they want to stand between you and the sun, well, then they will. Moving around them or closer to them might, on some occasions, spook them and scare them away. And I’d rather have imperfect photos of them than none at all.
So, bear that in mind before you go in all guns blazing on my iffy ‘togging skills. Or I’ll set my rhino on you.
