It’s just seven weeks until The Killers play “Cape Town” and that might explain why my whole family was dancing around the new study to the dulcet sounds of Brandon Flowers this evening before bathtime. We were both Human and Dancer, before you ask.
But it’s the brilliant cover they did of Dire Straits’ Romeo & Juliet that I’ve decided to share with you this evening. This was an amazing song to begin with and they have more than done it justice.
I know that the band are regular readers of this blog (who isn’t?), so guys, please can you play this one just as the sun is setting over the Franschhoek mountains, please?
This may or may not mark the beginning of a regular Killers-related Sunday blog post feature leading up the the concert.
Meh. It’s alright. Still prefer Dire Straits.
And if you don’t give me some feedback soon I’m going to steal that little ticket of yours.

No problem buddy. Now which side does the sun set in Africa?

I will try not annoy you weekly with girlish squeals of delight, but EEEK that is cool and they are so talented.

Having never listened to this band before, I watched this (as you say, the original is a great song). Not at all impressed – the cover version is played very straight, so you get no indication of talent beyond mimicry, and the lead singer doesn’t have much of a voice.
Not a bah-humbug comment – just curious as to what the fuss is about? Is there another track you can point me to that you think is representative of them at their best?

Goblin > I like this version. I like the original.
Brandon > Downwards.
Po > I can hardly wait. But, since I’ll have to, I will.
Jacques > Maybe I like the straightness of it because the original was so good. That said, the original is so open and reliant on Mark Knopfler’s voice to carry it, that I think it demonstrates a big talent in just not ruining it. Especially when it’s really not their style of music, although, of course, you don’t know that. Yet.
But their own stuff is pretty impressive too. Hmm. Representative track…?
How about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6r4KT8-VX0
A big favourite with many and a (fairly) recent hit.
Ah, now I understand why I’ve never heard of them. Thanks.

Jacques > Oh, that made me laugh. Out loud, nogal.
Jacques > Apparently, I should have sent you this way instead.

Personally, I doubt that it will make a difference, but just crossing the i’s and dotting the t’s…
I like The Killers and l-u-r-v-e “Somebody Told Me”… enjoy and make sure you sing the kids chorus in “Tranquilize”!!
